Team Sonic Racing is Sega’s answer to the character kart racing
genre, but with a more team-centric competitive focus rather than
on individual placements. Play as characters from the Sonic
universe and learn what it really means when you “gotta go
In Team Sonic Racing, you choose from 15 characters in the world
of Sonic, and enter in 12-person races in tracks inspired by the
worlds of the series. Characters are divided into Speed, Technique,
and Power classes, and each class has their own unique strengths
and weaknesses in each race.
During the races themselves, Team Sonic Racing sets itself apart
from other kart racers with its heavily team-focused gameplay that
has plenty of cooperative opportunity. Every race is a team race
that pits four teams of three against each other. Placement in the
race is less about being first at the finish line, and more about
points racked up from working together. For example, team moves can
help teammates get out of sticky situations, while powerups can be
shared to bring the whole team together. There are even Team
Ultimates that can change the pace of every race in an instant.
The game features 14 different powerups that confer offensive or
defensive effects, allowing teams to defend their current position
or catch up with their opponents. Each kart can be customized with
parts for different performance benefits, and new parts can be
unlocked as players progress through the game.
There are 21 tracks and multiple game modes such as Time Trial
and Exhibition, and there’s also an Adventure Mode which tells the
story of why all these Sonic characters are racing in the first
place, when Sonic himself is probably faster outside his kart than
The game supports local and online competitive multiplayer, as
well as three-player cooperative mode in Team Adventure.
